Good news for undead zombies who consume the flesh of the living and the television viewers who love them: AMC said on Monday that it has officially ordered a second season of “The Walking Dead,” its original series adapted from the comic books written by Robert Kirkman about human survivors in a world overrun by the ambulatory deceased. (Catchy phrase, no?) Though AMC ordered just six episodes of “The Walking Dead” for its first season, it seemed a virtual certainty that the show would rise again when its debut episode, broadcast on Halloween, broke a ratings record for that cable channel by drawing 5.3 million viewers, the largest audience it had recorded for an original series. AMC, which is also the home of the serial dramas “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “Rubicon,” said the second episode of “The Walking Dead” was watched by more than 4.7 million people.
Season 2 of “The Walking Dead” will be 13 episodes long, AMC said, though no dates were given for the start of its production or its premiere. (Given that the show is produced in and around Atlanta, we’ll assume AMC will do all it can to avoid filming in the hot, sweltering, zombie-makeup-melting summer.)
