Graphic Books Best-Sellers: It's … Superman?

November 5, 2010, 9:30 am

“Superman: Earth One,” the first in a new series of graphic novels from DC Comics, is perched at No. 1 on the hardcover list. This installment, written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Shane Davis, wonders what would happen if the origin of the Man of Steel were told in the present day. The story not only chronicles the young Clark Kent’s journey to becoming Superman, but shows how he lands his job at The Daily Planet (which in this retelling is suffering from declining readership. Great Caesar’s Ghost!).

The news media has found this new Superman fascinating. The New York Post was captivated by his fashion choices: “He wears hoodies, has smoldering eyes and, as lanky Clark Kent, wears low-cut pants and hipster skinny ties” and thought he resembled Robert Pattinson in “Twilight.” The Associated Press remarked that this version of Clark Kent would not be “out of place in hipster lairs from Brooklyn to Seattle.” On CBS News, Katie Couric commented on Superman’s less imposing physique: “he’s less beefy, as if he might have snorted a little kryptonite.” You can pass your own judgments after you check out these preview pages at dccomics.com.

Next up – besides, undoubtedly, a sequel – is “Batman: Earth One.” How will the Caped Crusader be reinvented for the modern age?

As always, the complete lists can be found here, along with an explanation of how they were assembled. See you next week!
