Bernadette Peters Keeping Her 'Follies' Options Open

November 1, 2010, 5:35 pm

7:30 p.m. | Updated Judy Katz, the spokesman for Bernadette Peters, just wrote with news that Ms. Peters had to turn down the “Follies” production in London “due to scheduling problems.”

If a revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Follies” lands on Broadway in the next year or two via Washington, D.C., or London, Bernadette Peters seems determined to play the lead role of Sally Durant Plummer.

Ms. Peters has already been cast in the part for the Kennedy Center’s production of “Follies” next spring, after she wraps up her current Broadway run in another Sondheim musical, “A Little Night Music.” But she has also talked to Trevor Nunn, the director of “Night Music,” about playing Sally as well in a “Follies” revival that he has said he is considering for London in 2011, Ms. Peters’s spokeswoman confirmed last week.

“Bernadette and Trevor made a really great connection on ‘A Little Night Music,’ and they’re eager to work together again,” said the spokeswoman, Judy Katz. “They’ve been talking about a few shows to do together, and ‘Follies’ came up. But there is nothing official to announce.”

Ms. Katz provided confirmation after a few well-connected theater producers said they had heard Ms. Peters wanted to be the next Sally on Broadway and that she wanted to be a part of both the Washington production and the possible one in London in case one of them transferred. But Ms. Katz dismissed the notion of any maneuvering, saying that Ms. Peters loved the role of Sally and was excited to perform it in Washington and to work with Mr. Nunn again.

The story of showgirls reuniting decades later at a crumbling Broadway theater where they once performed, “Follies” features such Sondheim classics as “Losing My Mind,” the despairing ballad sung by the character Ms. Peters is scheduled to play in Washington.

There has only been one Broadway revival of “Follies” since its 1971 debut — a 2001 edition starring Judith Ivey as Sally and Blythe Danner as Phyllis, the other lead role. (Jan Maxwell will play that part at the Kennedy Center.) It was critically panned and closed three months after opening.

Mr. Nunn did not reply to an e-mail sent last week seeking comment about a possible London “Follies.”
