Gates Foundation Gives $30 Million to Smithsonian

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given the Smithsonian Institution $30 million to create an endowment for online education programs aimed at students in underserved communities. The donation was reported on Wednesday by the Puget Sound Business Journal. In a press release, the Smithsonian said it would use the donation to build on existing programs that use interactive websites, online conferences, distance learning and games to reach new audiences. The donation follows two $10 million grants by the foundation to the Smithsonian since 2009, one of them to support the construction of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture. The chairwoman of the Smithsonian Board of Regents, Patricia Q. Stonesifer, is a former CEO of the Gates Foundation.
