Jennifer Grey Wins 'Dancing With the Stars'

November 23, 2010, 11:23 pm

Nobody puts Baby in the corner, but you can put her in the winner’s circle: Jennifer Grey, the “Dirty Dancing” star, was named the winner of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night, fending off a late challenge from her fellow competitor Bristol Palin.

Ms. Palin had enjoyed an increased media presence in recent days while her mother – you know, the former governor of Alaska and onetime Republican vice-presidential nominee – promotes a new book and appears with her family in a new TLC reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Bristol Palin was also the beneficiary of several grassroots campaigns encouraging “Dancing” viewers to vote for her. But she placed third on Tuesday’s finale, having earned a total of 104 points out of a possible 120 in her four final judged performances.

Kyle Massey, a star of the Disney Channel comedies “That’s So Raven” and “Cory in the House,” was the season’s runner-up. But it was Ms. Grey who bounced back from an injury-plagued season (and who said she was dancing on Tuesday with a ruptured disc) who scored perfect 10s from all three of the professional “Dancing” judges in three of her four final performances, and claimed the reality show’s coveted mirror-ball trophy.

At the end of the program, Ms. Grey told the “Dancing” co-host Tom Bergeron, “I didn’t think I was going to compete tonight and I’m really glad I did.”

The winner of “Dancing With the Stars” is determined through a combination of scores from its professional judges and votes from its home audience. The program did not disclose on Tuesday how many votes were cast in advance of its finale; Mr. Bergeron said only that the show had recorded “more votes than ever before.”

On her Twitter account, Sarah Palin saluted all three finalists, writing: “Congrats Jen,Kyle,Bristol,et al, for proving competition is GOOD! Remember: “They’re going to criticize anyway, so you might as well dance!”
